Title:
Sawing of oak logs parallel to bark and parallel to pith
Research subject and fields:
Abstract:
Researchers have been carried of with the aim to compare the two methods of sawing oak logs on band saws: sawing parallel to pith and taper sawing (sawing parallel to bark). Testing samples consisted of 50 logs for each method of sawing. An adequate measuring has been performed immediately after sawing and after seasoning of unedged boards which are intended for further conversion into dimension stock. Particular significance has been given to analysis of recovery of logs sawn by these two methods. Researches have given the following results: - quality, quantity and value recovery of logs sawn up in mentioned methods statistically show an insignificant difference;
- time necessary for setting, sawing and turning logs on the band saw is significantly longer in sawing parallel to pith;
- there is an insignificant difference in size of cracks occuring during seasoning of boards by any of the two methods;
- average width of boards obtained from logs by taper sawing is significantly larger;
- it would be useful to continue with the researches in the field of these two different methods of sawing oak logs.
