Title:
The effect of grit size and sanding direction on sanded surface roughness
Research subject and fields:
Abstract:
This paper discusses the effect of grit size, the fibre and sanding direction and various sanding treatments on sanded surface roughness. As expected, the experiments have shown that the surface roughness is smaller as the DIN Grade No. of sandpaper is higher, and that the roughness of the sanded surface in cross sanding is generally smaller than in longitudinal sanding (along the grain). Additional sanding of beech veneered specimens with sandpaper 220, following the sanding with sandpaper 180, resulted in no significant improvement in surface roughness. Among 16 various sanding treatments, the one with sandpapers DIN Grade No. 100, 150, 180, sanding along the grain, proved most efficient.
