Title:
Preliminary research on manufacturing water-resistant particleboards
Research subject and fields:
Abstract:
The paper presents an investigation into laboratory manufacturing of three-layer particleboard, type V100 (according to DIN 68763). The following types of adhesives have been used:
- Adhesive "I" - a combination of urea-formaldehyde and phjeol- formaldehyde adhesives
- Adhesive "II" - phenol-formaldehyde adhesive
- Adhesive "III" - phenol-formaldehyde adhesive
- Adhesive "IV" - a combination of urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde adhesives.
The laboratory manufactured boards met the DIN requirements for board type V20, but failed to reach the tensile strength perpendicular to board plane required for V100 type. The reason for that was that the boards were manufactured as three-layer boards with very fine particles in the face layers. Those fine particles have great specific surface which results in poor chip blending, i.e. a small ratio of the adhesive to the particle surface. In further experiments boards will be manufactured as unilayer boards, as is usual for waterresistant particleboards. This experiment was conducted on three-layer boards on explicit demand of the manufacturer.
