Title:

Quantity yield of European walnut sawlogs (Juglans regia L.) during sawmilling

Research subject and fields:
Abstract:

The aim of the research was to determine quantity yield from primary and secondary sawing, as well as from parquet production. In research, the standard methods used in Croatia were applied. The object of the research were European walnut sawlogs of first and second quality classess, used on sawmills in Croatia. The primary sawing was done on the primary band saw and the band resaw. All the boards were steamed right after sawing, in order to gain unique colour. Afterwards, unedged boards were sawn into dimension stocks and floorings using the rip-cross sawing methods. Those were then dried and processed into massive (lam.) and finished 2-ply parquet. The results obtained in the research are in line with the results from similar research on most common wood species. Our research confirms some of the facts from previous research, including the one that the higher quality class obtains higher quantity yield at primary and secondary sawing. Dimension stocks or wood elements are the main product of the secondary sawmill, so the portion of dimensions gained from first quality sawlogs is higher than the portion of floorings, while the portion of dimensions is smaller in the case of second quality class sawlogs. If we compare the results of this research with the results from previous research on some other domestic wood species, we can come to a tentative conclusion, that the results are very similar or that the results of yields are a bit lower in this research. Quantity yield in parquet production is linked to quantity yield in primary and secondary sawmill. Therefore, the quantity of finished 2-ply parquet, as the final product gained in the plant where this research was made, was higher in processing the higherquality class sawlogs.
