This paper presents adhesion theory from the standpoint of surface energy. The nature of surface tension is discussed and shown to be dimensionally and numerically similar to surface energy. Differentiation is made between smooth surfaces and rough surfaces and a roughness factor is introduced. Critical surface energy has been explained and calculated for beech sanded surface. The paper also presents work of adhesion as a criterion for the determination of optimum surface tension of adhesives and calculation of the maximum work of adhesion and optimum surface tension.
